Swedish Tall Case Clock with Calendar
Mora clock in a beautifully carved tall case, Sweden circa 1820. The clock itself is quite sophisticated for a Mora movement, having an integral calendar function. The narrow case, most certainly from northern Sweden, is an interesting mix of country form with more sophisticated details. The bonnet’s bridal crown has a rococo shell and foliage surmounted by a simple Swedish rose. The body of the case has raised detail suggesting a rural cabinetmaker adapting urban designs, but the shape of the base is less sophisticated.
In this clock, one can find evidence for the practice of country landowners purchasing clockworks in Mora while on a trip to Stockholm, then having the case made locally.
