Swedish Secretary in the Baroque Style
Two-part baroque style secretary in black paint, Sweden circa 1880. The upper section has a bold arched cornice over a pair of doors with shaped, raised and reeded panels. Inside are three fixed shelves, the top one with serpentine form.
The lower section has a nicely fitted interior with brass pulls behind a slant front with over-all vertical reeding. The reeding is carried down over the three graduated drawers below and the apron. The piece sits on tapering square feet with applied lozenges. The writing surface is not supported by the typical pullouts but instead rests on the top drawer when in use, a detail sometimes seen in pieces from the late 19th century.
