Early Swedish Secretary with Green Glass
Rare early Swedish secretary, circa 1760, in two parts which retains its original green glass. The upper section has a beautifully arched cornice above a pair of glazed doors. (Three of the panes were replaced at some time in the past with matching old glass.) The original carrying handles are on the sides, and there are two fixed interior shelves.
The lower section has a slant front with a recessed panel that conceals an interior fitted with stepped drawers, two small concealed drawers, and a locking central compartment. Below that are three deep serpentine drawers with their original hardware, and on the sides are the original carrying handles.
Why carrying handles? This secretary was made for a family with enough wealth to have both summer and winter homes, and this piece – which held their valuables – would have moved with them from one to the other.
