Bonad with David Taking Saul’s Spear

$1,500.

Fragment of a Swedish bonad dated 1818 showing the moment in 1 Samuel when David comes upon the sleeping Saul and secretly takes his spear and his water bottle.  The artist enhances the scene with draperies at the borders and a depiction of the heavenly power that cast Saul and his men into a deep sleep.  The lower panel is from the story in Genesis of Joseph’s brothers coming to him in Egypt.  Three of the brothers are shown kneeling to ask for grain.  Tempera on homespun fabric, newly framed with archival materials.
