Swedish Bonad: Water into Wine

$ -- Sold --

Fascinating example of Swedish folk art, this bonad dated 1818 shows the scene from John’s gospel story of the wedding at Cana when the servants fill six stone jars with water and then draw out wine for the feast.  The two servants are depicted with their lower halves in profile and their torsos and faces turned toward the viewer, a common convention among these country painters.  There is an absence of perspective, and the empty space is filled with pattern and daubs of color.  Tempera on homespun fabric, newly framed with archival materials.
