Early Danish Mangle Board with Love Tokens
Lovingly carved Danish mangle board dated 1739 and having the initials “MID.” The horse shaped handle has a bold shape with arched neck, incised mane, and articulated ears. The board itself has three compass carved roundels interspersed with hearts and flowers. Two intertwined tulips, the symbol of undying love, begin at the bottom of the board and meet under the horse’s head. The original salmon paint is accented with four brass brads. The surface wear indicates that the mangle board was put to practical use. Minor repairs.
