Early Danish Mangle Board with Exceptional Carving

$ -- Sold --

Beautifully decorated Danish mangle board dated 1811.  The handle is a carved horse with arched neck, articulated ears, mouth and forelegs, and incised bridle, still retaining traces of its steely gray paint.  The board itself is covered with elaborate compass-drawn designs including a mariner’s compass rose.  Closer to the handle is a magnificent carving of a covered and draped urn balanced over a swelling heart.  The work is bold and the original salmon and blue paint decoration meticulous.  Truly one of a kind.
