Early Bonad with Nativity Scene
Fragment of a longer bonad, Sweden circa 1820, illustrating the visit of the shepherds to the newborn Jesus. On the left are Joseph and Mary, and on the right are two shepherds with hats in hand, directed by an angel. In the center is the manger with the Christ child with the ox and the ass looking on. As is typical of these folk paintings, the empty space is filled with colorful swirls, clouds and kurbits. In the lower background, the artist has added striations suggesting the walls of the stable.
Tempera on paper with some small areas of missing paint. Newly framed with archivally safe materials.
