Two Part Baroque Secretary with Original Hardware
Early Swedish baroque secretary in two parts dated 1734. The upper section has two doors with raised panels under a scrolled broken cornice with central dated plaque with floral carving. Inside are four fixed shelves, the top one shaped and notched for spoons. The lower section has three full width drawers under a slanted front which opens onto a fitted interior. Original massive brass hardware includes carrying handles on the sides and an over-sized key. The interior hinges and door fastenings are hand wrought iron.
The asymmetrical carving of the plaque at the top is in a more rococo style and suggests that the secretary may be even older than the panel itself. The carved tulips and roses, symbols of everlasting love, hint that it may have been added to commemorate a wedding or anniversary.
