What Makes our Painted Pieces Special?
In earlier times without electric lighting and large windows, people depended on paint -- including painted furniture -- to brighten a home. The painted decoration on a country cupboard, chair, or bench would have been a source of pride for both the cabinetmaker and the original owner.
But the recognition of old paint's value is a recent development in the antiques world. Over the years, collectors and dealers have stripped or sanded valuable antiques to erase every last trace of paint. Recently, many older pieces have been repainted and distressed in an effort to recreate the original ambience. Even when this new surface is successful, the value of the piece is seriously compromised.
We are proud that the furniture pieces at Cupboards and Roses retain their primary painted surfaces. Each piece is in excellent, original condition. We have established relationships with experts in Europe and Scandinavia who have spent their lives in the study and sourcing of folk art and ceramics. Edith brings her years of experience to bear as she scrutinizes each piece she purchases from them. Her reputation rests on her ability to balance quality and value.
