About The Store
“Fifteen years ago, I flirted with painted furniture. Today, I’m in love with it!”
Edith Gilson was born and spent her childhood in the mountains of Bavaria, where she came to love traditional painted furniture. As a young woman, she came to New York City and began a career in marketing research. In 1984, she was the Senior Vice President for Strategic Planning at J. Walter Thompson Advertising Company when she was honored as “A Woman of Outstanding Achievement in Industry” by the National Board of the YWCA.
As a respected businesswoman, her opinions were published in The New York Times Advertising Section and in major trade publications here and abroad. In 1987, she published Unnecessary Choices, an “in-depth study of American women at the top of the corporate ladder”.
Following a desire to “lead a simpler life,” Edith left J. Walter Thompson in 1989 to relocate to the Berkshires and to create Cupboards & Roses Antiques . The store combines her lifelong love of beauty with her memories of warm family gatherings in homes filled with traditional furnishings. “When people come into my shop, I hope they feel welcomed and surrounded by beautiful things.
Presently, Edith Gilson is the president of the Berkshire County Antiques and Art Dealers Association, a director of the Southern Berkshire Chamber of Commerce, and a director of the Berkshire Visitors Bureau.
